BRAZILIAN LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage (BLD), as the name suggests, is a style of lymphatic drainage originating from Brazil. Lymphatic drainage in general has been proven to reduce inflammation, detox the body, and increase immune function. BLD’s extra focus on the abdomen and digestive system also support digestion and reduce bloating. This modality has been gain noteriety by celebrities over the past few years for the aesthetic - “snatched” - results, while also gaining traction in the health industry for its health benefits. It’s perfect for integrating into your wellness routine, detoxing from a vacation, or preparing for a big event.

Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is an important part of human anatomy and health! It has three functions:

  1. Collect excess fluid in your body to return to the bloodstream or process it through the lymphatic system

  2. Absorb and transport fats and fat soluble vitamins

  3. Defend against invaders (viruses, parasites, bacteria, foreign particles, etc.)

Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system does not have a central pump. Instead, it primarily uses bodily functions like muscle contractions and respiratory movement to help keep it flowing! This is part of why staying active and taking deep breaths are integral to your health.

Sometimes, the body needs a little extra support to stimulate the lymphatic system, which is where Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage comes in!

What To Expect

During a BLD massage, lymph nodes are cleared with a gentle pumping, then fluid is brought to those nodes with rhythmic, flowing strokes. We’ll start by “clearing” your lymphatic nodes and vessels on for face, neck, and scalp, then move to your legs, abdomen, arms, and back. I incorporate work on the nervous system as well, leaving clients calm and relaxed.

Please hydrate before your session and avoid any heavy meals the day of! After your massage, continue to drink plenty of water and fluids and avoid alcohol, salty foods, and any other inflammatory substances. Many people feel tired right after their massage, so it is ideal to plan a restful day. You will likely pee a lot more than normal and may experience a larger and more odorous bowel movement the following day.

While every session aids in detoxification, the first session is often most intense as your body clears out stagnant fluid and filters toxins that has been there for a significant amount of time. People occasionally report feeling tired or experiencing or light nausea the day following their first session. These symptoms rarely persist for following sessions.

  • I love working with clients to help them feel their best for big days, whether its your wedding, work event, vacation, or anything else that is important to you!

If you get lymphatic drainage regularly, I would recommend doing a session two days in advance. This means that you won't have to pee excessively on your big day, but you still have all the benefits of a freshly detoxed system!

If you are new to BLD, I would recommend scheduling a session two weeks prior to your event. This allows you to know how your body responds to lymphatic drainage! From there, following the two days prior plan will continue to give you amazing results!

  • While BLD supports immune function, please do NOT book a session if you are sick or starting to get symptoms. BLD helps to clear lymph nodes and support lymphatic flow. While this is amazing in general, increasing that flow also means that you can spread the infection through more of the body, making it much harder for you system to fight off.

If you no longer have an active infection, but are dealing with long term affects of a sickness (such as long covid), BLD may help with those symptoms.

  • The answer for this depends on the person. I have had clients who deal with a lot of inflammation and come in weekly. There are others that I might see monthly or quarterly! We can discuss what frequency is best for you at your first session.

Generally speaking, I would recommend at least once per season.
